English Football Origins

The modern game of football we know today rose to prominence in England. Throughout the 1800s, different forms of football were played at English public schools. It was here where the first attempts were made to set some standard rules. In 1848 at Trinity College, the Cambridge rules were published after a meeting of minds between people from Harrow, Eton and Rugby, as well as other public schools.

However, these early football rules weren’t accepted everywhere in England. Founded in 1857 and recognised as the oldest football club in the world, pioneering Sheffield FC laid the foundations of the modern game. They established the ‘Sheffield Rules’ and printed the official Rulebook of 1859.

Just a few years later in 1863, The Football Association (FA) was founded during a meeting between public schools and eleven clubs based in London. This meeting led to the ‘Laws of the Game’ being drafted, eventually followed by these London Rules merging with the Sheffield Rules by 1878. And there, the game we love today was set in stone.

The Home of Football

For its rich history in the sport, England is known as the ‘Home of Football’. With its super popular competitions, football tickets in England are highly sought after by fans around the world.

The oldest known football competition in the world is the FA Cup. Starting life as the Football Association Challenge Cup, the first edition of the competition began in November 1871 with fifteen teams. The final was played between the Wanderers and the Royal Engineers in front of 2,000 fans at Kennington Oval, London, in 1872. The Wanderers came out on top, beating the Royal Engineers 1-0 to be crowned the very first FA Cup winners.

In 1888, several club owners met and agreed to the founding of the official Football League. The first season began in September 1888 and featured twelve teams. The first title was clinched by Preston North End, who also won the FA Cup to complete the first ever ‘double’ in English football.

Creation of Premier League

English football continued to evolve over the years with new divisions, teams and competitions. The First Division was the top tier of the Football League from the beginnings in 1888 all the way to 1992 - a historic year for English football.

In 1992, the FA Premier League was formed after all 22 clubs of the First Division decided to resign and breakaway from the Football League. The plan was for this new league to have more commercial independence to negotiate its own broadcasting and sponsorship deals, bringing more money into the game. This new top division, overseen by the FA, would sit at the very top of the English football pyramid with the three Football League divisions below it.

To say the creation of the Premier League has been a success is an understatement. It’s thought that the Premier League is now the most-watched sports league in the world. No wonder Premier League football tickets are so popular!

The Global Game

For more than a century, the popularity and enthusiasm surrounding football has continued to grow. In a way, this was driven by the early teams of the English and Scottish leagues who helped to spread the game as they travelled for business and pleasure.

As football made its way to different countries, we’ve seen the establishment of more national, continental and international competitions.

On the international stage, tournaments don’t come any bigger than the FIFA World Cup. After the founding of FIFA in 1904, it struggled at first to organise an international competition outside of the Olympic Games, where football had become an official sport at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London.

After the success of the Olympic competitions, then FIFA President Jules Rimet spearheaded the cause for its own world championship. The first FIFA World Cup was hosted and won by Uruguay back in 1930, who defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final in front of 93,000 fans!

The FIFA Football World Cup went from strength to strength and is now the most prestigious and anticipated football tournament anywhere in the world.

As the recently held tournaments in South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Qatar clearly show, there’s a huge global audience of football fans who love the game! More than 5 billion people tuned in to watch the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament taking place in Canada, Mexico and the United States, is set to be even more popular.

The Best of Europe

Alongside the international competition from FIFA, Europe is the hot-bed for first class football competitions.

The governing body of European football is UEFA, who decided to start their own international tournament in 1958. Like the World Cup, the UEFA European Championship is held every four years. Cleverly, the European competition comes at the halfway point between World Cups, meaning you only have to wait two years for a major international football tournament!

On the club competition side, the biggest stage in Europe, and indeed the world, is the UEFA Champions League. Originally founded as the European Cup in 1955, the UEFA Champions League is an annual competition that every European team wants to win. However, only the best of the best are invited to play in the Champions League. It’s a competition between the top teams of the domestic leagues, played across the continent with the final in a different host city each year. And then there’s the Champions League anthem, which is iconic in itself.

Alongside all of these amazing events, we football fans can also enjoy domestic leagues and club competitions on a weekly basis. Some of the best leagues in Europe include LaLiga in Spain, the Bundesliga in Germany, Serie A in Italy, plus Ligue 1 in France. Even better, at Zenseats we can supply tickets for all of these wonderful football competitions.
